Your Mum and Dad… Expletive (Sort of) Deleted
We’re staying with our friends Sam and George in Seattle this weekend. One of George’s favorite poets is Philip Larkin. We just finished a wonderful meal of duck confit, farrow salad and brussel sprouts, George read this poem by Larkin, a favorite of his and my sweet’s:
This Be The Verse
They f&^% you up, your mum and dad,
They may not mean to, but they do,
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra, just for you.
But they were f&^%ed up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats,
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another’s throats.
Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don’t have any kids yourself.
My love just saw this post, and said, “They’re going to see this at 7:00 on a Saturday night, and know you’re drunk…”
And (I mentioned this in my first post I’d have more fun over here) you’d not be right (I’m not drunk), but you’d have a better glimpse into the beauty of my life. My friends and family are those whom I’ve chosen… and it’s a beautiful, beautiful thing. (I love my mum and dad, by the way, and I love my Seattle family, too.)
Enjoy your extra hour this weekend.
